Cruise Shortlist
Alaska coastline in cruise season

Timing

When to sail

Three calendars overlap: climate, Atlantic hurricane season, and the US school year. Alaska ignores the first two. Caribbean does not.

By region

Caribbean

Year-round; busiest December–March and summer school break

Eastern and western loops from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Canaveral, Tampa, and Galveston. Hurricane season is June–November; most sailings still go, with itinerary tweaks when a storm is named.

Bahamas

Year-round; weekends sell first

The first-cruise product. Royal and Virgin both run short hops from South Florida. Perfect when you cannot take a full week.

Alaska

May through September only

May–September from Seattle and Vancouver. No hurricane problem. Celebrity and Royal both do it well; Celebrity is the quieter shipboard week.

Mediterranean

April–November; August is hot and expensive

Barcelona is the usual gateway for Celebrity Edge-class and Virgin. More time in cities than on a beach. Shoulder months (May, September, October) beat August heat and prices.

US school-holiday crush

  • Winter break / Christmas week

The most expensive week to sail from Florida. Suites and balconies on the big ships go first.

  • Martin Luther King Jr. weekend

Short Bahamas and 4-night Miami sailings spike.

  • Presidents’ Day week

A favorite couples window. Virgin and Celebrity Caribbean fill.

  • US spring break window

Families take Royal Oasis/Icon. Adults-only Virgin stays busy with couples on school-holiday weeks.

  • Easter / Passover week

Overlaps late spring break. Short Bahamas sailings are especially tight.

  • Memorial Day weekend

Alaska season is open. Caribbean is the last easy long weekend before peak storm months.

  • US summer break

Family peak on Royal. Alaska and Med are in season. Caribbean hurricane season has started on paper.

  • July 4th week

A pricing spike inside summer. Shift a week if you can.

Value windows we like

Late April – early June

Spring break is over, Alaska is just opening, and Caribbean rates beat winter. One of the best couples windows.

May and September in Europe

Mediterranean without August heat or August prices. Celebrity and Virgin from Barcelona.

Early June Caribbean

Hurricane season has started on paper; storm activity is usually still low. Better fares than March.

First three weeks of November

Storm season is winding down, Thanksgiving has not hit. A quietly excellent Florida departure window.
